MY INSPIRATION
From “why do leaves change color?” to seeing science as beautiful
“Science is so much more than memorization. It takes curiosity, creative problem-solving, and a passion for discovery.”
In sixth grade, I wondered why leaves change color and turned to science for the answer. By 15, I was testing my own hypothesis on improving the precision of cancer immunotherapies.
I realized many students resist science simply because they aren’t exposed to it early. In my school system, science didn’t really start until sixth grade. So I started a science fair program for fourth and fifth graders.
At first, many said science sounded boring. But as they chose their own projects, from how temperature affects a baseball’s height to what makes slime stretchier, their mindsets changed. They loved designing experiments and couldn’t wait to see their results.
After presenting to a room full of families, every single student said they wanted to join the high school science research program. They all came to see science as beautiful.
